The Problem With "I'll Deal With It in Spring"
Old fuel is the number one cause of spring start-up problems. Petrol that sits unused for 3–4 months undergoes chemical changes — it oxidises, water can contaminate it, and the lighter hydrocarbons evaporate, leaving a varnish residue that coats the carburettor's jets and passages.
A carby clean is a $65 job at our workshop. A full carburetor rebuild — if the gum has really set in — can push to $120 or more. A $15 bottle of fuel stabiliser added in autumn, or simply running the tank dry before storage, prevents it entirely.
What We Check in a Pre-Spring Service
- Fuel system: Drain old fuel, inspect lines and filters, clean or rebuild the carby if needed
- Spark plug: Replace as a matter of course — they're cheap insurance
- Air filter: Clean or replace; a blocked filter causes rich running and hard starting
- Engine oil: Change the oil if not done since last service — old oil has acids that damage bearings
- Blade: Sharpen and balance after winter — grass cuts better, engine works less hard
- Safety systems: Check blade brake, dead-man handle, and seat switch if applicable
- Drive system: On self-propelled models, check belts and drive engagement
How Much Does It Cost?
A full walk-behind service at Gotcha Mowers starts from $175. For ride-ons, from $275. That's a complete going-over — oil, spark plug, air filter, blade, and full run and tune.
Compare that to the cost of a breakdown mid-mow on a 40-degree day: parts plus labour plus the inconvenience. The service pays for itself the first time it prevents a call-out.
When to Book
August is the ideal time — before spring hits and the backlog builds up. We typically start seeing a rush from early September. Book in August and you'll be first in line, with your mower back the same week.
