THE COMPLETE RIDE-ON MOWER MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

A ride-on mower is a serious investment — $2,000 to $10,000+ depending on the brand and model. Regular maintenance is what separates a mower that runs for 20 years from one that costs you a fortune in repairs after five.

Every 25 Hours (or Each Season)

Engine Basics
Check and top up engine oil — change if dark or overdue
Replace spark plug(s)
Clean or replace air filter
Replace fuel filter
Check fuel lines for cracks or leaks
Cutting Deck
Sharpen and balance all blades
Check blade bolts for correct torque
Inspect deck for cracks or damage
Check and lubricate spindle bearings
Clear packed grass from underside of deck
Drive System
Inspect all drive belts — check tension, look for cracking or glazing
Check tyre pressure (typically 10–12 PSI for rear, 8–10 PSI front)
Check wheel bolts and lug nuts
Lubricate front axle pivot and wheel bearings

Every 100 Hours

Extended Maintenance
Replace engine oil and filter (if oil-filter equipped)
Check battery terminals — clean and grease if corroded
Test battery condition and charging voltage
Inspect and adjust valve clearance if recommended by manufacturer
Check and adjust cutting height gauge wheels
Inspect PTO clutch engagement and brake

Safety Checks — Every Use

These take 30 seconds and can prevent serious injury:

  • Seat switch — engine must cut when operator leaves seat with PTO engaged
  • Blade brake — blades must stop within 3 seconds of disengagement
  • Park brake — must hold on a slope
  • Check for fuel or oil leaks before starting
